Hey there! My name is Ronald Yip and with me is my amazing wife Eliza Wan.

Welcome to Ruthswellness.com!

About ten years ago, when I sTarted my journey to regular half yearly medical checkups involving blood test, and general health check, I was “diagnosed as having type 2 diabetes, Hypertension and high cholesterol” – the 3 HIGHs. You know the story.

While 3 these three common health conditions did not normally show symptoms. I was bored with having to remeber to take those medical pills and I was also told that I need to take them for life!

Hypertension or high blood pressure

What is defined as hypertension?

Hypertension (high blood pressure) is when the pressure in your blood vessels is too high (140/90 mmHg or higher). It is common but can be serious if left untreated. People with high blood pressure may not feel symptoms. The only way to know is to get your blood pressure checked.

There are five major categories of medicines for High Blood Pressure that have been proven effective in treating hypertension:

  1. Diuretics
  2. Angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors
  3. Angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs)
  4. Beta blockers
  5. Calcium channel blockers

Possible side effects of Hypertension medications may include:
Diarrhea, Fatigue, Dizziness, Erectile dysfunction, Headache, Cough, Constipation and low blood pressure.

High Cholesterol – LDL

With high cholesterol, you can develop fatty deposits in your blood vessels. Eventually, these deposits grow, making it difficult for enough blood to flow through your arteries. Sometimes, those deposits can break suddenly and form a clot that causes a heart attack or stroke.

High cholesterol can be reduced with medication such as statins – the most commonly used drugs to control low density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol. Statins work by blocking an enzyme that produces this “bad” cholesterol in the liver.

There are usually no symptoms of high cholesterol. But if left untreated, it can lead to heart attack and stroke. It’s often a hidden risk factor which means it can happen without us knowing until it’s too late. That is why it’s so important to get your cholesterol level checked.

A few changes in your diet can reduce cholesterol and improve your heart health:

  1. Reduce saturated fats. Saturated fats, found primarily in red meat and full-fat dairy products, raise your total cholesterol. …
  2. Eliminate trans fats. …
  3. Eat foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids. …
  4. Increase soluble fiber. …
  5. Add whey protein.
Medicine

Type II Diabetes

Type 2 diabetes is a chronic disease that occurs when your body cannot make enough insulin and cannot effectively use the insulin it makes. This is called insulin resistance, and it develops over months or even years1.

I was prescribed with Metformin. It can help keep your blood sugar at a healthy level. It comes as tablets. Common side effects of metformin include feeling sick and diarrhoea.

What did I do with the medicines 5 years ago?

After taking the prescribed medicine for 3 years, I have been suffering from Erectile dysfunction and I didn’t know why until I discover that Thiazides I consumed daily was the culprit. All those medicines I have been taking only controls the symptoms and I was told that I need to take them for life. As I become a better lifestyle medicine enthusiast, understood more and more I decided get rid of the medicine bit by bit. Instead of 10mg, I’ll reduce the dosage to 5mg. Five years later I become medicine-free! I contimue to visit the clinic every 6 months for routine checkups and until now my health condition is perfect.
